Alcoholism and chemical dependency or addiction is recognised as a primary, chronic, (often fatal) disease by the American Medical Association. At Nairobi Place our philosophy is that whilst addiction is not the fault of the addict, recovery from their disease is their responsibility. The aim of the treatment programme is life-time abstinence from mood-altering drugs and self-destructive behaviours through changes in personality by transformations of thought, feelings and behaviour.
The basis of our treatment programme is the Minnesota Method pioneered in the United States, and now successfully used the world over. This treatment model is adapted from the 12 Step Philosophy first propounded by Alcoholics Anonymous which includes frequent meetings with other recovering people where their experiences, strength and hopeare shared, and in which changes in daily behaviours are encouraged. Within this approach clients are taught about their disease, engage in individual counselling and group therapy, and learn new coping skills. In addition, occupational therapy, art therapy and relaxation techniques are taught and used to enhance their process of recovery.

Assessment
We first undertake an assessment of the client to establish their suitability and need for treatment, which involves an in-depth interview with one of our counsellors, regarding their history of alcohol/drug use. As denial of the problem is common with alcoholics/drug-addicts, the presence at the assessment of a family member or a person who is significant to the client is often beneficial to provide moral support as well as verification of the client’s chemical dependency. In addition, addiction being a disease that affects the whole family, we have in place a "Family Support Programme" to help those close to the client come to terms with their own pain, resultant from the addict’s habit.
The purpose of this interview is to encourage the client to take the courageous step of accepting that they need help to stop drinking/using.[Cont]
